Here’s an example of the kinds of computer work I find interesting.

found this post from three months ago. Have not heard anything new as of yet.

Got pirated music? Pay Apple $24.99 per year for iTunes Match and RIAA amnesty

Apple on Monday debuted a new subscription service called iTunes Match which scans a user’s library of music, and “matches” the user’s songs with iTunes’ database of 18 million songs. Instead of actually uploading the songs to a server like Amazon Cloud Player and Google Music Beta, iTunes Match simply identifies the song on the user’s machine and then makes the equivalent song available “in the cloud” for download on other devices. The company did not reveal whether the service will have any methods of detecting music ownership. If a song is identified, it is made available for download in 256Kbps AAC audio, irrespective of the source file’s audio quality. In essence, a low-quality, illegally downloaded song will be recognized by iTunes Match and “laundered” into a lossless legal copy. Songs that don’t match up are uploaded to the cloud just like Google and Amazon’s services. Unlike those services, however, the $24.99 annual charge has no storage limitations. iTunes Match and iCloud will launch in beta this fall.

Cool Notepad Trick – Hirlpoo West – Site Home – MSDN Blogs

This neat trick came across on an internal alias. I hadn’t seen this before, but I’m guessing it isn’t new. Pretty handy for notetaking (if you’re a plain text sort of guy/gal). Open a blank Notepad file Write .LOG (in uppercase) in the first line of the file, followed by Enter. Save the file and close it. Double-click the file to open it and notice that Notepad appends the current date and time to the end of the file and places the cursor on the line after. Type your notes and then save and close the file. Each time you open the file, Notepad repeats the process, appending the time and date to the end of the file and placing the cursor below it.

The fanless spinning heatsink: more efficient and immune to dust | ExtremeTech

There’s a fundamental flaw with fan-and-heatsink cooling systems: no matter how hard the fan blows, a boundary layer of motionless, highly-insulating air remains on the heatsink. You can increase the size of the heatsink and you can blow more air, but ultimately the boundary layer prevents the system from being efficient; it’s simply a physical limitation of fan-and-heatsink cooling systems in specific, and every kind of air-cooled heat exchanger in general, including air conditioning and refrigeration units. But what if you did away with the fan? What if the heatsink itself rotated? Well, believe it or not, rotating the heat exchanger obliterates the boundary layer, removes the need for a fan, and it’s so efficient that it can operate at low and very quiet speeds. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the Air Bearing Heat Exchanger [PDF]. Developed by Jeff Koplow

Here’s an example of the kinds of computer work I find interesting.

from pcmag and John C. Dvorak (partial)

iPhone Users Are About to Be Screwed Over

But good ideas can’t be killed. But this “good idea” isn’t about the convenience of paying with a phone swipe, but the idea of running your tab through the phone company. If you think your banker is a gouger with dubious fees and no-leeway, what do you think the phone company will be like? Yes, let AT&T handle all your money for you, and see how that works out in the end. I’m immediately reminded of the online scams that took place during the modem era of communications. You’d be given a number to call, and it would actually be some sort of scam. The local number would connect to a BBS of some sort which would send a code back to the modem to turn off the speaker, so you couldn’t hear the modem disconnect and then redial a number in Bulgaria or some obscure island. You’d then be connected to a phone service that charged $100/minute for the connection. After racking up thousands and thousand of dollars in phone costs, you’d get the bill from your phone company for $30,000. You’d bitterly complain about the bill—these stories were all over the news during this era—but the phone companies said they couldn’t do anything about the charges. The rates were protected by some U.S. treaty scammed together by the phone companies and signed into law. There was nothing they could do! So, you had to pay or lose your phone service and be sued in court. This was unbelievable. I’ve always been convinced this was test marketing to show the banks and everyone that the phone companies were the best collection agencies and should be in charge of your credit card and other transactions. After all, you can stall the bank, and what can they really do, anyway? You stall the phone company and you are disconnected from the world. Do not let AT&T or Verizon or any phone company anywhere near your day-to-day financial transaction business! You’ve been warned.
